The San Diego Chargers filed today for multiple Los Angeles based trademarks, taking the next step in a possible move about 120 miles north. Chargers majority owner and president of business operations A.G. Spanos signed the application for the “Los Angeles Chargers” and “LA Chargers” trademarks, according to Nathan Fenno of the LA Times.

The Chargers were granted an option to relocate from San Diego to Los Angeles last week after the NFL owners voted to allow St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke to move to Los Angeles. Kroenke is building a stadium in Inglewood, Calif., and it is slated to open in time for the 2019 season.

Spanos has until Jan. 15, 2017 to accept the option for relocation to Inglewood. If the Chargers pass on the option, the Oakland Raiders will have a year to decide if they want to move to Kroenke’s Inglewood site.
