Fake It Til You Make It?
More and more, athletic wear is making its way into the fashion world. It started off with people wearing yoga pants outside the studio, and now people are sporting joggers with blazers on a daily basis. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if people are wearing the athletic gear for working out or vegging out. Has fitness turned into a fashion statement?
Over the past year we’ve seen sports bras slowly transitioning into leisure bras, and yoga leggings mutating into sleepwear. In fact, it’s hard to tell the difference between the loungewear and the sportswear while you’re browsing your local Victoria’s Secret. What does this mean? It’s no secret that some days you’re feeling tired and worn down, and you wonder, “Well, if I wear my yoga pants and Nike sweatshirt, maybe people will think I just came from the gym. Then, I don’t even need to put on makeup!” It’s okay; we’ve all been there. At what point does it stop? Athletic wear isn’t cheap, so does it make sense to buy all the gear just to casually walk around in it? It doesn’t help that these workout clothes aren’t being advertised as such.
Do women (and men) buy these clothes with the hopes that owning them will encourage them to exercise? It IS the New Year, and resolution season is in full swing. But the more slouchy, sequined and non-supportive athletic wear I see, the less I think this is the case. Also, when you wear heels with your joggers and athletic tee, no one is fooled. No one.
But we can turn this around! People can use their vintage Nike sneakers and waist-banded sports bras for exercise instead of an intense session of Netflixing. There are a million and one ways to exercise, and you’ll look super cute doing it. Who know’s, maybe you’ll meet “bae” in the weight room.
