Curation is derived from the Latin word ‘curare’ (to take care of), and going further back, ‘cure’ is known to have originated from ‘karo’ (sorrow). Excluding this equivalent relationship between ‘curation = cure’ in exhibitions is, in a way, trusting in individuals’ ability to self-heal. Each person’s imagination and creativity fill up this world, embroidering the white cube. Regarding the tremendous flooding of visuals that appear when the image becomes autonomously regulated… We open ‘Curation Free’ in the hopes of recovering our ability to self-heal in the post-internet era.
Current Location
After opening in Bakurocho in April 2022, NEORT++ has held exhibitions in a consistent manner where the gallerists and curators plan the themes and select the artists. Using digital technology as a medium for new expression, NEORT++ provides an outlook on humanity, art, aesthetics, and sensibility found in the digital realm.
In this experimental project, we have decided to invite artists through an open call under the title of ‘Curation Free’. There is only one condition to the application: the artwork needs to be something that can be projected into the space of NEORT++. As the title of the project suggests, there will be no explanation of the selection process, adjustments of the works, and even the concept of the exhibition. Anyone who wants to participate, regardless of their field or occupation, can intervene in the physical space of NEORT++ via online channels. In a way, this could be considered a new form of social art practice in the post-internet era.
Internet, the prosthetic arm we have acquired, can no longer be excluded from our body of expression. Nonetheless, it would be one of our roles as digital natives to think of what is possible rather than to mourn or deny the current situation. Finding an aesthetic within the anti-order brought by the images without limits — here at NEORT++, we wish to realize the flood of impressions through the chaos of imagination or creative power.
