TEAM SEAS is aiming to remove 30 million pounds of plastic and trash from the ocean, rivers, and beaches.

The current condition of the ocean

Humanity has dealt with the ocean very badly. For years, we’ve got had an out of sight out of mind mentality. We have dumped a lot of trash in the sea, currents have formed debris into five massive garbage patches. There are 5 gyres to be exact — the North Atlantic Gyre, the South Atlantic Gyre, the North Pacific Gyre, the South Pacific Gyre, and the Indian Ocean Gyre- which have a massive effect on the sea. The patch covers a predicted 1.6 million square kilometers — roughly 3 times the size of France — and presently floats among Hawaii and California. It is predicted to contain 80,000 tonnes of plastic. Plastic and different trash cloud the water and decrease the oxygen level. One hundred million marine animals die every 12 months from plastic waste alone. 100,000 marine animals die from getting entangled in plastic yearly — that is simply the creatures we find! 1 in three marine mammal species get found entangled in the litter, 12–14,000 heaps of plastic are ingested through the North Pacific fish yearly.

In 2015, National Geographic reported that there’s an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean. About 269000 tons float on the surface while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer drift in the depths. These microfibers occur when larger pieces of plastic are broken down by sun exposure and by huge waves. When the plastic is degraded by huge waves and sun exposure, this plastic releases chemicals that further contaminate the ocean.

What is TEAM SEAS?

Team Seas, this campaign is to remove 30 million pounds of plastic and trash from the ocean, rivers, and beaches. The removal of this trash has both immediate and long-term wide-ranging positive effects on the ocean ecosystem. Mr.Beast one of the most famous YouTuber of all time is organizing TEAM SEAS. This story started in 2019 when Mr. Beast crossed 20 million subscribers on his main channel, on that day Mr. Beast decided to plant 20 million trees. The initiative was started by American YouTubers MrBeast and Mark Rober. This collaborative fundraiser event was named TEAMTREES. Every single dollar you donate was used to plant one tree. That means one dollar is equivalent to planting one tree. This event was very successful, by December 26, 2020, the project had raised $22,702,530 surpassing the fundraiser’s goal to plant 20 million trees. As of May 2021, the project has raised over $22.9 million and planted 7.1 million trees.

Seeing the success of the TeamTrees Campaign, Mr. Beast and Mark Rober decided to launch Team Seas. Every US dollar you donate is equivalent to removing one pound of trash from the ocean. The initial target is to remove 30 million pounds of plastic and trash from the ocean. This is just the beginning of the campaign and an ambitious plan is underway to achieve a 90% reduction of floating ocean plastic by 2040.
