India is one of the economies where large-scale and fast-paced digital transformation can be observed. From both the private and government sides, there is a keen interest in the adoption of digitalization, especially Cloud, AI, and IoT. With the start of the “Digital India” Programmed in 2015 by the central government, the push for digitalization in the economy has grown and evolved a lot, attracting international attention and applause. In this article, we will take a peek into some major milestones of the digitalization of India.

  • Adhaar

Adhaar is a Unique Identity recognized throughout the nation. It was launched in 2010 and has been a great success and a milestone for citizen identification. Adhaar is one of the early applications of digitalization applied under, thus hosting a centralized user identity, which can be validated both online and offline. This has been one of the keys to opening the doors of other digitalization opportunities since Adhaar can be validated both online and in person. The centrally available user data can also be spidered onto bank accounts, mobile numbers, etc thus making a strong security web.

  • UPI

Unified Payments Interface is a digital payments interface system developed to make payments instantly on both peer-to-peer (interbank) and person-to-merchant. Initially, UPI was developed only for payments within the boundary but is recently being extended to the international level. UPI is one of the digital transformation milestones in India which has received a lot of attention from other nations and bettered our financial inclusion. Since the launch of UPI, many websites have added it as a payment option. Last year, the government has initiated actions to enable UPI on feature phones through IVRS and SMS, thus enabling payments without the internet as well.

  • 5G

India’s 5G Journey was quite successful and much appreciated. With the complete integration of 5G, it is predicted to change the digital landscape of the country, giving rise to much technological innovation and economic development. The 5G rollout already began in major cities and has been widely adopted yet. Cellphone manufacturers and Network providers are already prepared for the large-scale adoption of 5G. The spotlight is that India has played a key role in designing and implementing rather than just a mere usage of the technology.

Comparing the internet inclusion and data usage of India over the last few years, the online presence of Indians has gone up. Digitalization has put a change in the day-to-day lives of each Indian thus bringing the nation closer to the digital world.
