In recent articles, I talked about low-poly modelling and how I just fell in love with this process after watching some of Imphenzia’s videos. And since last Sunday I’d shown a little tree, I decided to make some rocks to go along with it!

I’m still using the open-source 3d soft Blender, of course ;)

Some low-poly rocks made in Blender!

This time, I focused on Imphenzia’s tips and tricks about subdiving and decimating. Basically, he shows in one of his videos how you can get really nice low-poly results by working in 3 steps:

  • first, add lots of details to a mesh
  • then, shape it how you want
  • finally, resimplify the topology by removing vertices

This can all be done pretty easily in Blender thanks to the “Subdivision surface” modifier, then the proportional editing and, for the final step, the “Decimate” modifier. You can see how these modifiers impact the level of details of my mesh in the video below.
