Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher dropped some serious weight for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

In an industry like Hollywood, appearance may not be the only important thing, but it certainly is up there — and Star Wars is no exception. Even though Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford are reprising their iconic characters, they still have to look the part.

And, since it has been over thirty years since Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi released, they needed to get back in shape for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Well, at least Hamill and Fisher did, because, according to them, Ford has always been shape.

‘They don’t want to hire all of me — only about three-quarters!,” Fisher told Good Housekeeping, saying she had to lose some weight for the role. Back in May 2014, Fisher told Extra TV that she actually lost 40 lbs!

Hamill, on the other hand, had to step up and lose a whopping 50 lbs(!) to play Luke Skywalker again, according to an article in Rolling Stone (via The Guardian). While Fisher takes a jab at Hollywood for making her lose weight, Hamill pokes fun at himself, saying he must have “looked dreadful before”.

“Nothing changes: it’s an appearance-driven thing,” Fisher said. “I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger, because that’s how easy it is.”

Hamill and Fisher incorporated the same regimen most people do when the want to lose weight: eat healthier and exercise more.

“‘I did it the same way everybody has to — don’t eat and exercise more! There is no other way to do it,” Fisher continued. “I have a harder time eating properly than I do exercising.

“It’s easier for me to add an activity than to deny myself something. And when I do lose the weight, I don’t like that it makes me feel good about myself. It’s not who I am. My problem is they talk to me like an actress, but I hear them like a writer.”

Hamill was on a similar diet, telling Rolling Stone, “Look at what I’m eating now instead of potato chips and bagels,” he said, while eating fruits and vegetables, “I’m on the ‘if it tastes good, don’t eat it’ diet.”

There’s no denying there’s an appearance issue in Hollywood, but there’s also no denying Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher look much better now than they did two years ago.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens releases on December 18th.
