Hey there everyone!

Here we are again, giving you notice of what we’ve been up to this year of Summer Internship. So, last June 29th, we had the meet and greet of our interns with a meetup here at Nest Collective. But it wasn’t just a meet up. As we all know, boys and girls just want to have fun and fun is one of the main words here. We welcomed our interns with a ghost workshop.

What was it about? Drinks! Yes, we don’t want anyone dehydrated so we invited Pedro Simões, to teach us how to do some Caipirinhas, Mojitos and Long Island Iced Tea. With drinks on our hands, all the companies from Nest made brief presentations.

Yes, yes, you want to know who the brave 6 interns are. Ready? Drum rolls, please…

Ladies first, with an enviable skill to do mojitos, we present you Joana. Then we have Diogo. Don’t let him fool you with is calm look, he had fun with the ghost workshop too. Next, Chico e Zé. These guys love us, I mean really LOVE us because then didn’t applied to any internship except for ours. 😉 Last but not least we have Leonardo and Lorenzo. They’re not related to Da Vinci although Leonardo is quite ingenious and Lorenzo comes from Italy.

Now that you already know them, let’s share some of the things these guys have been up to.

First week was a busy one, each company has provided training in its area of expertise. That has allowed the interns to know better each company and mentor. We had workshops on Developing Processes, HTML/SASS, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, React, CSS Grid, Responsive design and much more.

The second week began with the Design Sprint and Cláudia Acabado made our interns sweat but, in the end, they really liked this process. For them it was something completely new. They investigated every detail and problem that Nest is facing and had to come up with a solution.

Defiant? You could say so, but for them it’s been rewarding to think of a project from the beginning. Identifying the problems, come up with a solution and make it work. Actually, they highlighted the way that the internship is structured and the open environment of the companies here.

Now, entering on the third week, the developing stage begins. Our brave interns say that they’ve been learning a lot, the availability of everyone is having a positive impact on them. In Diogo’s opinion “the university teaches us basic things but here we are learning how to work with a team, colleagues and getting the feel of the business environment”. They all agree that the main values of the internship are: developing their soft skills and the fact that they are contributing to the project from the beginning until the end.

This year’s project it’s a little bit different from previous years. Mainly because we are trying to solve some problems related to the management of communities and companies. Sometimes companies share a great space and environment but it can be difficult to manage the communication between them. Whether it’s concerning the management of resources, like the meeting room availability, material orders or simply the code of conduct. Minor problems can become a great gap in community management so, this year’s project is all about coming up with a solution that can fill these gaps here at Nest or, in the future, to other companies.

Until now, the interns highlighted the fact that they can talk to users while they’re developing and they consider it rewarding. As Francisco says “it adds real value to the product and we can fix some problems helping people that we see everyday. Everyone is at our disposal”.

Considerations from our interns until now? This is the best internship in all Europe. They all acknowledged that this internship isn’t just about learning and be prepared for the future. In Lorenzo words “you leave this place a better person because you work but you also socialize and make new friends”.

For now, that’s all folks. Stay tuned to our next post about this internship.
