The Africa You Don’t Know

Africa is not a country, neither is it infused with abject poverty or encompassed by unhealthy people. The whole continent is not torn apart by war nor is it subjected to famine. Africa is the second largest continent in the world, it contains 54 countries, each exceptional in it’s way.

Africa today is a vast continent with many bustling metropolises, friendly people, and amazingly diverse and beautiful landscapes. While there are some places resembling the stereotypical Africa of war, famine, and poverty, most of the continent is peaceful, well-fed, and of working class.

Jeff Verkouille, who grew up in the USA and is currently living in Abuja, Nigeria, answered this question on why anyone would want to live in Africa;

Because it is a marvelous and diverse continent with much going for it. Yes, there is poverty, but also opportunities.

It’s similar to asking why someone would want to join a Silicon Valley start up: a huge risk of failure, low initial pay, insane working hours, but the payoff could be life changing if one picks wisely and gets lucky enough.

I would point out that Africa is gigantic:

There is an astounding array of variety in all aspects of life in this immense land. There are still vast savannas with wildlife, but also developed cities with access to the internet, paved highways, and modern malls.

In the end, one might wish to live here for the same reasons one might choose to live anywhere. Plus many of the people are generous and kind, foods (in Nigeria at least) spicy, and the weather warm.”
