Password Managers: Are they Worth it?

The short answer: yes.

Imagine if you had separate keys for all of your valuables: your cabinet, your car, or even your house. Now imagine keeping each key in a different location and memorizing the location of each key and what they opened. That is the real-life equivalent to not using a password manager. Now, what if you had a key ring for all these keys and only you knew where it was. This would make it incredibly difficult for someone to get to your valuables unless they knew about your ring of keys. A password manager is very similar in that you only need to remember a single password to access your other passwords. Using a password manager can arguably be the single most important thing you do to protect yourself in today’s password-dependent digital world. In this article, we cover three benefits that password managers provide you: simplicity, convenience, and security.

Simplicity

As mentioned, a password manager will help simplify your online world by only requiring you to remember a single password. This allows you to create a unique password that is only used for the manager, reducing the likelihood that you will reuse a password, or worse, use an easily guessed password (for instance, if you use ‘password123’ as your password, please change it now).

Convenience

A convenient password manager means that you can carry it with you if you decide to leave your desktop or laptop. Today, there are plenty of password managers that have mobile apps and will sync across all devices. Better yet, some mobile-friendly password managers will let you use your fingerprint as the master password. Having something that is convenient will even allow you to remember passwords for sites you may have only used once or twice.

Security

Another great benefit of password managers is that they can help you generate solid, complex passwords for all your online accounts. This means that you don’t have to come up with a different password for all your accounts. As convenient as it is to have the same password for all your online services, it can be devastating to lose access to all your accounts because someone obtained your single password.

At the end of the day, figuring out how to use a password manager is much better than writing your password down on a sticky note and hiding it under your keyboard, or worse, sticking on your monitor where everyone can see. There are many password managers out there, and it can be difficult deciding which ones to use. Stay tuned as we’ll be reviewing a couple password managers in the future.
