As a developer, you want market relevant skills that keep you up to date with industry trends. But how do you know what the market really needs? How do you stay relevant in an industry that’s constantly changing?

As a good developer, you can’t reach your income earning potential without continuously improving your skills. It’s difficult to stay on top of the latest trends and understand how to implement them into your projects. What technologies should you learn? What do you focus on when articles about industry trends contradict each other? Which resource is trustworthy?

Introducing the State of Stack

If you want to go far in your career, it’s best to listen to people who are where you want to be-in this case, other successful developers. At Netguru, together with Typeform, we created the State of Stack to give you real insights from other developers.

See the interactive chart

State of Stack allows you to compare your skills with the most desirable skills on the market. We began by preparing surveys in 4 different categories: Frontend, Backend, Mobile and Devops (more categories coming soon). Just fill in the form and see your results.

The idea for creating the State of Stack came from one of our developers — he wanted to advance in his career and to know what skills/technologies would impact him in the upcoming months. There are so many paths you can take with programming right now — it’s exciting to see, whether you’re doing something relevant to current trends or completely out of the mainstream :) Adam Nowak, Head of Technology, Netguru

What happens once you complete the survey?

  1. You’ll get to compare your skills with other developers.
  2. You’ll get access to the developers’ community.
  3. You’ll learn what the most desired skills in development are.
  4. You’ll get tools to plan your professional path for the coming months/years.
  5. You’ll have a better outlook on career opportunities.

State of Stack is a great challenge but I’m really proud of the results so far. I hope developers find it useful. Michał Hartwich, Developer, Netguru

The nuts and bolts

To collect data, we used Typeform. It’s a fast, easy to use, and fully responsive tool for building surveys, even for non-technical people. We embedded the prepared forms in a fullscreen iframe HTML element on our page. Thanks to Typeform, we didn’t have to create our own backend.

Our goal is to create a fast, lightweight, cross-platform application for presenting data using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Additionally, one of the requirements was the ability to host the application on Hubspot. React was the best tool to create this app. Routing is realized with a react-router plugin. The data is presented with the use of a Chart.js library and charts are rendered on canvas to ensure performance and flexibility on every device.

We spent some time on designing the look of charts. Making the charts interactive wasn’t easy, but finally we did it! We used the chart.js computation engine and wrote our own rendering methods. However, the most challenging task was data processing and calculating overall stats. We moved these operations to a separate service.

Fill in the form

Now it’s your turn. Help us make State of Stack the most reliable resource for developers. Fill in the form and share it with friends and fellow devs. As soon as we gather all the necessary data, we’ll send you interactive charts to help you along your professional journey.
