Amritsar Train Accident: Till now, 61 people died in the mishap

Unfortunate Amritsar train accident, where till now around 60 people are killed as the train ran over them while watching Ravan Dahan, on the occasion of Dussehra. The second train, the 13006 Amritsar-Howrah Express, rushed from the second track within seconds later to the first mishap, which caught few people under it as well.

The train was coming from Jalandhar when the accident occurred at Joda Phatak near Amritsar, where at least 300 people were watching ‘Ravana Dahan’ at a ground near to the railway tracks.

The Nakodar Jalandhar DMU №74943 was coming from Hoshiarpur to Amritsar via Jalandhar, the signal was clear for the motorman, during the accident, the exact reason for the accident is yet to be cleared.

It is said that Navjot Singh’s wife, Navjot Kaur Siddhu was the chief guest for the event and the accident took place few minutes after she left the venue.

Preliminary Investigations have revealed that neither the organizers nor the police administration had barricaded the tracks to stop people from venturing on the railway tracks.

Railway authorities clarified that the organizers had not taken any permission from them for the Ravan Dahan near the tracks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the family of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The state government has announced 5 lakh compensation for the family of the people who were killed in the accident.

Who’s responsible for such a big mistake which costed 61 live till now? Was it the railway authority responsible or was it the local administration responsible? Was it the carelessness of the motorman?

State mourning has been declared in Punjab on the account of Amritsar train accident, all the schools and office institutions will be closed. The administration and railway officials if had taken adequate precautions, such a huge mishap could have been avoided.
