Contracts Granted for the First Phase of the Coastal Road Project

Contracts for the proposed Mumbai Coastal Road Project has been granted for the first phase of the project, despite any nod from the Standing Committee of the BMC.

The standing committee had provided the essential green signal for the Coastal Road project. The proposed Mumbai Coastal Road project is to be completed in two phases. Accordingly, advisors were appointed for the first two sections and the proposed plan was sent to the Standing Committee for the final approval.

Lewis Berger Consulting Pvt. Ltd. and Izis India Consulting and Kalin Gromit and Row (UK) were the two advisor companies appointed for the Coastal road project, for the first two phases i.e. from Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace and from Baroda Palace to Worli- Bandra Sea link.

The proposed advisor plans were sent to the Standing Committee of BMC for final approval, however, the committee didn’t respond to the file of the project even after a month. Later the file was sent back to the Commissioner stating there are several flaws in the plan.

Additional Commissioner of BMC stated that the plan was sent to the committee and if the plan is not given a final nod by the committee even after 30 days, then it is assumed to be approved by the committee (Deemed to Pass) and accordingly we have finalized the plan with the company.

The Standing Committee, however, claims that it has rejected the plan and had sent the file back to the office, but now the plan is approved and the work order has been allotted to the companies, then what about the rejection by the standing committee?

“We have allotted the work order to the two companies for the first phase of the Proposed Mumbai Coastal Road Project.” Mohan Machiwal, Chief Engineer, Mumbai Coastal Road Project.

The contract of the second phase of the project has been granted later to L&T, which will include twin tunnels with standard facilities.
