Even after 4 years of the Modi govt, River Ganga remains dirty

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Constituency Varanasi, where he promised the cleaning of river Ganga remains unfulfilled even after 4 years of the Modi government, the condition of River Ganga has not changed much as the river is still dirty.

Modi announced the ambitious Namami Gange project, which involved cleaning the ghats and promoting afforestation in the river basin.

According to the CAG reports, failure in financial management, planning, implementation and monitoring, huge delays in approval of projects, huge unspent balances, and failure to achieve 100% target of “Open Defecation Free” villages in the river basin area.

According to the CAG report, the faecal coliform level across the river was found much much higher than the prescribed level.

In July last year, the National Green Tribunal said the quality of Ganga water has not improved even after spending over Rs 7, 300 crores. National Green Tribunal (NGT) had earlier stated that the government should consider putting a health warning on “Gangajal” (Ganga water) now.

Namami Gange Programme was initiated by the Prime Minister of India for various developmental, cleaning and monitoring the holy river Ganga which flows through many states. But CAG reports have turned the ambitious project upside down with its loaded flaws and inefficiency.
