Finally Mahape Underpass Repairs Over

Navi Mumbaikar finally ready to travel on Mahape underpass road. with the MMRDA, A contractor completed the repair work on Mahape underpass and cleared all three lanes for traffic movement, an issue highlighted by a TOI report on Sunday.

From the last four-months, Motorist complaining about the seepage in the drainage system, leading the agency to block vehicles on the third lane and later the first lane in order to detect the problem area and rectify the same. The underpass, which is 500 meters long and has three lanes, was built at a cost of Rs 19.63 crore. The underpass is meant to help Belapur-bound motorists at the busy Mahape junction from where the road leads to Kalyan, Dombivli, Ambernath, Panvel, Mumbra and Thane

According to MMRDA sources, “There were some minor issues which have been attended. All three lanes have been thrown open for motorists. Due to high tide, the groundwater had risen as the drainage is one meter below sea level. We have rectified the problems and motorists won’t be inconvenienced. The problem was in the third lane. But the first lane was blocked for a while on Saturday for cleaning purposes.”

It was thrown open by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on May 21 but developed cracks and seepage due to groundwater pressure early in June itself. This is the first important underpass that runs parallel to Thane-Belapur Road and is meant to ease traffic snarls at the junction from where the road opens out towards Kalyan and further. The underpass is crucial here due to a flyover crossing the Thane-Belapur road at the point.

“We suspect the veracity of the work which has led to seepage. Waterlogging has been a nightmare for us and most users avoid the last carriageway. The agency should rectify the problem permanently as it crops up in just over 3 months,” said Ajit Jaiswal, a motorist.
