Journalist Shujaat Bukhari murdered in Kashmir

On Sunday evening, Senior journalist of Jammu and Kashmir and editor of ‘Rising Kashmir‘, Shujaat Bukhari (50), was shot dead in a press Colony in Srinagar. His personal security officer (PSO) was also killed while another suffered a grievous injury in the attack.

According to Maharashtra Times, there were total three unidentified people on a bike whose photos were caught on CCTV footage.

Veteran journalist and Rising Kashmir editor-in-chief Syed Shujaat Bukhari and his two personal security officers (PSOs) were shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside the newspaper’s office in Srinagar on Thursday.

The attack happened near Laal Chowk in Srinagar when Shujaat Bukhari on his way to Iftaar Party. They started firing on Shujaat and his security. After this attack, a high alert has been issued in Srinagar.

While talking to NDTv, Jammu and Kashmir police chief SP Vaid told that “Killers were aware of his whereabouts. They were waiting for Shujaat Bukhari to come out of the building and it appeared to be a planned attack. It was not clear, however, who were responsible for the attack.”

The J&K Police have also released the pictures of Bukhari’s suspected killers and appealed to the general public for providing valuable information leading to their arrest. The CCTV footage obtained by the police shows the three bike-borne attackers who came wearing helmets with their faces covered.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti paid tribute to Sujhaat through Tweeter. In her tweet she said,

  • Shujaat Bukhari had done his Masters in Journalism from Ateneo de Manila University.
  • Bukhari was The Hindu’s correspondent in Srinagar from 1997 to 2012 and a contributor to the Frontline magazine.
  • Bukhari was a popular commentator on national TV channels. His brother, Basharat Bukhari, is Law Minister in Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s government.
  • Bukhari was instrumental in organising several conferences for peace in the Kashmir Valley. He was also part of the Back Channel Diplomacy with Pakistan.
  • Shujaat was the President ofAdbee Markaz Kamraz, a cultural and literary organisation in Kashmir.

Meanwhile UN Human Right has published a reportin which they have mentioned about various attacks on Human Rights of People of the valley.
