MMRDA: Rolling Stock Contract for 3 Metro Lines

As the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) opened financial bids for three metro corridors, BEML Ltd was found to have tendered a bid lower than the agency’s estimated cost of Rs 3,900 crore, said an official.

PUBLIC sector firm BEML Ltd on Monday emerged as the front-runner to supply rolling stock of driverless trains for three Metro lines in the city.

The contract is for the supply of rail coaches for Metro 7 (Andheri East-Dahisar East), 2A (Dahisar to D N Nagar) and 2B (D N Nagar to Mankhurd). The original deadline for Metro 2A and 7 was 2019. Now, the trial run on Metro 2A and 7 is expected only next November, after the BJP-led government ends its term in October.

“We expect the civil work to be over by the middle of 2019,” the official said. “Unfortunately, the issue of rake procurement got delayed in a bureaucratic maze in New Delhi.”

Agency received a good response with seven consortia in the fray — BEML, CRRC Corporation Ltd, Bombardier India and Bombardier Germany, and international companies. The MMRDA began the tendering process in August, opening final bids this month.

Metropolitan commissioner R A Rajeev said scrutiny of bids was yet to be done by the Delhi Metro Rail Corp, which is handling the bidding process and the Asian Development Bank funding the project.
