Mumbai Coastal Road: 3 Multilevel exchanges, 18 Entry-Exits planned
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) ambitious coastal road project, proposed for around 12,000 crores, which is aimed for easing traffic in Mumbai city will have three Multilevel exchanges and 18 entry-exit points.
The 29.2-km coastal road will start at Princess Street flyover in Marine Lines and end at Kandivli. It will have eight lanes, with two bus rapid transit system (BRTS)
In the first phase, the 9.98 km Coastal Road from Marine Drive to the south end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) will be constructed.
While the Peddar road interchange will have four entry-exit arms, Haji Ali interchange will have eight and Worli six. BMC will also construct an underground parking lot near the three interchanges, with a capacity of 1,625 vehicles.
BMC has decided to set a speed limit of 40km/hr for every vehicle on the Coastal Road and it has also planned high-tech crash barriers for the road, called crash attenuator or crash cushion.
A crash attenuator is a device intended to reduce the damage to structures, vehicles, and motorists resulting from an accident or sudden collision.
As the road is near the sea, the steel which will be used in the construction will be coated with chemicals to avoid rusting and any kind of damage.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will construct the 5.6km extension of the Bandra-Worli sea link to Versova. It is yet to be decided that who will build the remaining stretch from Versova to Kandivli.
BMC has already added many unique features in the project, twin tunnels with hybrid facilities etc. The Coastal Road project is expected to be completed by 2024. Contracts for the first phase of the construction have been already granted. BMC is working well on each and every minutes of the project. Coastal Road project can lessen the traffic congestion in Mumbai suburbs in the mere future is what it is to be watched out for.
