NMMC Hires Consultant to Study Road Safety

Navi Mumbai potholes, traffic jams, illegal parking and traffic problems has been increasing day by day. In order to repair and maintain the 100 kilometres main roads of the city, NMMC standing committee has cleared a Rs 40 lakh proposal to hire a private company to undertake an elaborate road safety study. The issue of flyovers, underpasses and pothole-free roads will be also included in the study.

Navi Mumbai‘s population is increasing day by day. Navi Mumbai is second in the list of survey of residential cities by the Central Government, but compared to other facilities, road transport facilities are less. To overcome this problem, the Palm Beach road, Thane-Belapur Road, Vashi Turbhe Link, Airoli Underpass to Airoli Bridge, Vashi to Sion-Panvel Highway and Sion-Panvel Road to Koparkhairane, Ghansoli Road and other 100 km length long road safety reports will be prepared.

Tandon Urban Solutions Private Limited has been hired by NMMC to study various aspects about road safety in Navi Mumbai, and thereby offer its suggestions on how to minimize accidents and also traffic jams by implementing zebra crossings, rumbler strips, signals and also CCTVs at strategic points. The move has received mixed response from citizens and activists.

As per the road safety plan, civic officials have pointed that over 200km-long main roads, interior streets, and bylanes need a proper study , especially the various mishap-prone spots also need to be scientifically collated so that proper signboards, signals, speed-breakers can be put up. Similar road safety studies have also been done earlier in Pune municipality and other civic bodies.

RTI activist Anarjit Chauhan said, “Any developmental works are welcome. However, I too feel that the civic body should first look internally for solutions, by asking the engineering department to form a plan. Are our city engineers not qualified enough for this simple task?”

The standing committee has also recently passed the street lights projects worth Rs 1.75 crore in zone 1 of NMMC jurisdiction to improve street lighting in the city, especially in the gaothan areas where defunct lights need to be replaced to help pedestrians and prevent any unwanted accidents.
