Have you ever been in a situation, wherein, for some software to run on your company-provided device, you need to set your IP address as a parameter so that it can run on some network let’s say your company WIFI or your home network…

Do you need to contact again & again with the sysadmin to set the parameters because your IP address keeps changing?

👉 Blame Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

When a device connects to a network, it requests an IP address from the DHCP server on the network. The DHCP server assigns an available IP address to the device and also sets a lease time for the IP address (which can also be set to be not set…so that it is possible to reconnect with the network without any hassle).

When the lease time expires, the IP address may be released back and it becomes available for other devices to use.

If the same device disconnects from the network and then reconnects later, it will need to request a new IP address from the DHCP server.

Depending on the configuration of the DHCP server and the availability of IP addresses, the device may receive a different IP address than it had previously.
