Helsinki — London — Helsinki — Berlin

I arrived to Berlin three years ago a fashion brand in my suitcase, thinking I’d simply arrive and pick up where I left off in Helsinki. It was kind of a naivistic jump! In reality, it took a full year to figure things out. Berlin is a big city. It might take 24 hours to set up something you maybe established in 8 hours back home. Don’t panic!

My brand MIRKKA METSOLA does edgy yet wearable fashion for women and men. I focus on form, playful aesthetics and high quality materials. Essentially I came to Berlin to expand my brand and dive into fresh inspirations. I appreciate the atmosphere and the free rhythm of this city. There are no Mondays!

I coded some of the city’s inspirations into my new AW 16–17 collection ”Total Eclipse”. The collection is all about black, geometrics and minimalism. I created the collection for both men and women using the same materials and shapes to transpire the gender roles.

In the process of growing our own brands in new environments, we founded Inland Showroom collective with a like-minded designer colleague Kaisa Riivari. Inland unites young Finnish designers approaching international markets by inviting brands from all fields of design into one showroom. We have introduced fresh Finnish design at the Berlin Fashion Week, Hong Kong Fashion Fair and in St. Petersburg. And the story continues, cause it’s more fun to conquer the world in good company!
