Well, the most powerful clown in the world, is now the leader of the “free world” as they say.

The need to improve our collective intelligence is exponentially increasing in this post-fact, share first world. I’ve watched the entire press conference of the Donald’s two weeks ago — it certainly provided a laugh.

How technology hacks your mind

The field of philosophy & ethics is slowly making it’s way into technology, a long time coming in my opinion. While we’ve been completing our research for a piece on attention, we’ve identified that the overwhelming body of new research shows the prevalence for technology to hijack the pleasure sensors in the brain. More on that in future, but in the meantime I strongly suggest reading former Google Design Ethicist Tristan Harris’ piece; “How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds”.

Best Data Visualisation Projects of 2016

The beauty in data can be quite astonishing. Flowing Data’s selection for 2016 is powerful, with my particular favourite being XKCD’s “A Timeline of the Earth’s Temperature . If you believe in widening your horizons, then these data selections are your homework for the week.

Friend & Foe: A Conversation

This is a fascinating podcast by Sam Harris with Maajid Nawaz , an Islamic reformer. Maajid is a counter-extremist, author, columnist, and Founding Chairman of Quilliam — a globally active organisation focused on matters of integration, citizenship & identity, religious freedom, immigration, extremism, and terrorism. Maajid spent countless years in his youth as a leader of a global Islamist group, and has gradually transformed to liberal democratic values. Maajid is now a leading critic of Islamism, while remaining a secular liberal Muslim working to reform his religion. With what has happened in the Middle East with ISIS & countless civil wars, this conversation is important for those wanting to understand the root causes of the current sectarian violence — to ensure their conversations are educated. Perhaps The Donald would do well to listen to this.

Japanese Words That Don’t Exist in English

You can see how much I miss Japan by some of the recent articles we’ve featured. When it comes to linguistics I cannot find myself bypassing Japanese. 11 Beautiful Japanese Words that only a culture so sophisticated, yet complicated, could articulate. My personal favourite — Kogarashi.
