Mechanisms of Depression š
I recently celebrated my ninth anniversary with my life & business partner-in-crime, Lauren.
Weāre both huge Japanophiles, and have been experiencing deep nostalgia recently ā so I thought Iād treat ourselves to an Onsen experience, private room, the whole gamut. It was incredibly relaxing, but not the best idea to be doing mid-afternoon. Needless to say, we were practically gone for the rest of the day.
Iām almost certainly convinced we now require our own Japanese bath set up at home, a la Tim Ferrissā evening routine.
For all you other Japanophiles, Iāve been loving Abroad in Japanās videos. If you want a laugh, definitely check this out. His videos are that perfect combination of English humour, and the reality that is living in Japan.
As ever, hit reply and let us know what you think of this weekās morsels.
Mechanisms of Depression
Depression and anxiety are on the rise, approx. 300 million people in the world are known to fit under this umbrella of cognitive diseases. Six years ago ā like 14% of Australian adults ā I suffered a serious bout of anxiety, onset by the development of gut issues, thanks to food intolerances.
Iāve learnt a lot about what impact inflammation has on the gut in initiating mental disease. This is why youāll often hear the digestive system being dubbed as the āsecond brainā.
This animation by Dr. Rhonda Patrick discusses how systemic inflammation ā caused by stress, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle or lack of sleep ā create the environment for depression. Itās still unclear whether there is more going on here, but you can be certain that inflammation is a key variable, and you should be taking steps to reduce it ā make sure you check this out to understand why.
Trust and Respect
Before people ask how ā while in your twenties ā to stay in a relationship for 9 years, you need to know two things: trust and respect.
It seems almost obvious that you need to have similarities, but this doesnāt necessarily mean youāll have the same personality and interests. Values are what count.
This Quartz article highlights the commonalities amongst long term relationships, and identified a few bedrock ideas as to what trust and respect actually mean.
Respect in particular is important, because it builds trust over time. But what does this look like? Choosing to face-up to problems, instead of bitching behind their back to your friends; respecting their different interests and opinions, and being open with each other ā this means no secretsā¦or bad ones at least.
7 Billion People in 6 Minutes
We recently recorded a podcast with Anthony Ross from Tribal Wellness, a good friend who has an immense understanding of nutrition, movement, and how that corresponds to our evolution.
Focusing on the big picture or first principles is what we like to do, and this video will certainly do that.
Human Population Through Time, focuses on migration of Homo Sapiens, and our progression to 7 billion people in under 6 minutes ā showing how exponential our growth as a species has been. Donāt be fooled though, as Neil DeGrasse Tyson has shown on the cosmic calendar, if the entire life of the universe was condensed to one calendar, recorded history would account for less than 10 seconds.
