Asking for a Friend

Do you have sudden thoughts to create
such things in this world
with much glamorous ardor and forces that whelm —
they compel you to give them life
— just a few breaths and a womb
until they beat with two heartbeats:
one to support and guard
one to sustain and grow!

And then, dearly unmindful of the pauses of time —
they try their presence in the world
to see if they are the ones
who become
the great humans of combined histories.

Tell me, my dear ones:
do you have this problem?
They seem to take from you
after you!
and yet oddly define you:
the path you walk, the ways you talk
the thoughts you choreograph
and the games that draw you in

Are they me
or me, them?
My friend wants to know.
