In his interview on CBC’s The Current with Matt Galloway, Dr. Grujich’s claimed we hear more about ADHD than the 3% prevalence rate would suggest and blames this on the media. He said many people who experience difficulty with inattention and hyperactivity quickly jump to the faulty conclusion that they have ADHD due to the heightened exposure and increase in self-diagnosis perpetuated by social media.
At the end of my last piece, I agreed that for an adult to be diagnosed with ADHD, they should have had symptoms in childhood. However, knowing little about what ADHD actually is (far beyond the doctor’s irresponsibly superficial and limited description of ADHD as mere “inattention and hyperactivity”), many people aren’t able to recognize they had ADHD traits as children. Further, a lot of people have their ADHD traits socialized or even punished out of them growing up.
As children, we’re scolded by parents and teachers for being impulsive, hyperactive, and inattentive. Sit down, be quiet, listen carefully, and stop that fidgeting. Many children with ADHD are also berated or bullied by peers for being different, for getting in trouble at school, and for…
