New Thrilling AI-Cooked Opportunities

Technology is similar to fashion in some ways, it’s always changing and outgrowing its predecessors by developing completely different tools to face the challenges of today and tomorrow. Some thirty years ago, sci-fi movies could not envision the possibilities we have today. News on new AI tools keeps pouring in at a rapid pace. Machine learning and synthetic data are continuously opening doors for new opportunities in industries like healthcare, retail, finance and sports. Technology has pervaded our everyday routine in an intangible, yet considerable way, providing comfort and convenience and getting us accustomed to it. As a generation totally addicted to these innovations, we’d better stay tuned not to miss anything truly revolutionary. Below is the list of today’s AI “hotties”.

  1. Fortune tellers should start looking for real jobs, since with Google AI predicting the time of your death with 95% accuracy, their services won’t be needed anymore. The Medical Brain team of the giant has implemented an AI algorithm able to predict the probability of death among hospital patients. The algorithm has been tested in two hospitals with the accuracy of 95% and 92% respectively. Such profound data analysis improves the solutions widely used in hospitals today and is logically expected to come to the forefront after the trials’ completion.
  2. Another significant AI application in healthcare brought the ability to predict the progress and evolution of cancer in the world. This new application, called the Revolver, was created by the united efforts of The Institute of Cancer Research, London and the University of Edinburgh. The Revolver can define patterns in cancer DNA mutation and use them to predict the future cancer behavior. This way, doctors can initiate the best possible effective treatment course, define the optimal drug use and reduce additional courses of chemotherapy and radiation therapy if not needed.
  3. Modern healthy lifestyle trends cannot help but affect major grocery manufacturers like Nestle, which is currently exploring AI possibilities to make a big entrance to the healthy food market. In the “Nestle Wellness Ambassador” program, taking place in Japan, about 100,000 people participated. They sent over the pictures of their food to get recommendation on the lifestyle changes and individualized food supplements (like smoothies, vitamin enriched drinks etc.). However, Nestle aims higher with home kits performing blood and DNA testing identifying susceptibility to the most widely spread conditions like high cholesterol and diabetes. Moreover, the company is trying to set algorithms analysing test results and genetic prerequisites to come up with unique nutrition solutions.
  4. An advancement in the field of speech and image recognition technologies has been presented by MIT scientists who have created a system able to identify an object by a voice description. Having an image and its audio coverage, the tool can show the geographical regions of the described images in real-time. The system doesn’t require additional manual detailing of the objects it’s trained on. It memorizes words directly from the audio clips and learns to correlate them with each other. Current available voice recognition systems, in comparison, need transcriptions for thousands of hours of recorded speech.
  5. An unexpected innovation has been made by the scientists from University of Washington, who have been training AI algorithms to detect cities or city areas with high obesity rates by analysing the buildings and their overall infrastructure. Their study proves convolutional neural networks can automate satellite images processing further studies of healthy indicators. Similar algorithms can be used for future research advancement in the direction of assessing the influence of racial composition and the prevailing socio economic relationships.
  6. An inspiring creation has been made by Yale scientists in the field of robotics. Their new “Robotic Skin” turns surrounded objects into obedient robots. Elastic layers with integrated sensors and actuators are specifically designed in the “Robotic Skin.” The object covered with the Skin gets vivified and can perform different activities based on the properties of the substrate. This way, a single “Robotic Skin” can serve as a multifunctional robot not requiring any specific adjustments. Simultaneous usage of several skins can ensure several activities at one time. Created prototypes include a wearable T-shirt designed to correct poor posture and gripping devices to move foam cylinders and other objects like worms. NASA has actively participated in this technology creation, since its unique multifunctionality can enable astronauts to perform different tasks using a single toolkit.
  7. Huge improvements have been made on a micro level. The idea of insect control first came up awhile ago, and there have been some successful attempts to equip insects with neural sensors to direct their motion. The University of Connecticut has done more and achieved impressive detailing by intertwining four-channel microcircuitry with insects’ antennae lobes. The whole system presents some sort of an electronic backpack sending electronic signals to either one of the insect’s lobes to direct it to go in the opposite direction. The insect receives signals indicating an obstacle and tries to avoid it. Despite the tiny size of the mechanism, it can bring significant results in different fields, starting from search and rescue programs ( in collapsed buildings) and reaching the level of national defence systems.

Current tendencies in AI and ML show great possibilities for technology implementation in the vitally important area of healthcare. It’s probably a good choice from humanity’s perspective. Advanced diagnostics and preventive actions can not only save lives, but also improve its quality for the majority of the world’s population. Further scientific achievements in space exploration is only a matter of time, since the requisites seems to be up and running. We can definitely rest assured, in case of emergency, obedient cockroaches will be there to help us out.
