Market Segments

The neurotech industry is composed of several different market segments with divergent but complementary goals. Historically, the primary segments were the following:

  • Researchers: Neuroscientists and psychologists
  • Patients: Disabled individuals with amputations or deafness

Research in neural interfaces started in the mid 1970s, with clinical applications in disease diagnosis being developed soon thereafter. Neuroscientists and psychologists, which include both researchers and clinicians, were the only users of neurotechnology for many decades, and they remain an important segment of the market.
