I recently awoke to the sweet and pleasant sound of birds chirping outside. When I looked out my window, I saw a tiny house wren setting up a home in the birdhouse hanging under my porch roof.

Before moving in, I used it as decoration in my apartment. I’m not a bird lover, but I liked the aesthetic of that little birdhouse, which is the only reason I bought it.

When I haphazardly put it up outside in 2018, I never imagined any birds would make a home in it. But they were nesting in it within a few weeks of my hanging it up. Every year since then, when spring rolled around, it was a guarantee that a little bird family would be up there — until last year.

There are plenty of trees in my area, but unfortunately, many are dying or dead, making it a haven for woodpeckers. Since moving to this house, I’ve encountered more woodpeckers than I have in my entire life.

What’s that noise?

Last year, I woke up one morning to a bizarre pecking sound. When I looked out my window, there he was — this tiny little woodpecker ferociously going at my little birdhouse with his beak. I don’t know what materials…
