A Love Letter to The Theater
A former thespian’s break-up letter
Dear Acting & Theater,
I never thought I would have to write you a letter, but maybe it’s time I did.
Things have become so volatile between us, and I am sorry that things did not work out for us. Twice.
I always called you a “jealous, over-possessive boyfriend who always wanted to hog my time,” and I let you be that in my life. But I think it is simply the way you are.
Perhaps I have been unfair to you. I wrangled you by the neck, constantly shook you by the shoulders, and demanded of you what you could not give me: fame and riches and wealth beyond imagining. It is simply not your nature to give me that.
I had fallen in love with you and thought I could spend the rest of my life with you when I saw your good qualities, and paid attention to them.
You always made me feel better — I was high on a kite whenever I was on stage. You let me be the queen of my body and voice, and the boards. You allowed me to play. All the time! Thank you.
You introduced me to fantastic characters and brought me incredible words that I could chew in my mouth and learn.
