I journey. I journal.

I’m having flashbacks. While acknowledging my twenty years writing, you can imagine there’s lots to remember.

Several of those years ago a few friends and I — Chilla Pertilla, Thomas Rain, Mr. Rockwell aka Mark Smith, Joe Kelley (R.I.P.) and few others — found ourselves at an after party.

We were there as guests of Baatin (R.I.P.) and T3 of beloved Hip Hop group Slum Village following the legendary “Smokin’ Grooves Tour” in their hometown of Detroit.

Our entire crew were big fans of every act on the bill, especially SV and headliners The Roots. We never thought we’d spend time partying with them! Well, Pertiila — a star himself — probably did. The rest of us were still finding our footing.

Pertilla was our biggest supporter, and he’d already been on a national platinum-selling album. He also independently moved thousands of units of his own music.

At the party he maneuvered through VIP as though entertaining guests in his own recreation room. He received pounds, gave out and received hugs, and toasted others with his flute of champagne. A rookie in this setting, I watched and took mingling notes as I drank soda from a regular glass.
