I often enjoy watching shows set in the 1800’s in America, but I only have one problem. Most of them kinda suck. That’s not as true for modern shows and movies, but I find many of the Western classics boring because the characters have little to no depth.

The good guys versus the bad guys and repeat the same damn script over and over again. Oh yeah, and the good guys always win in the end. That’s boring, and that is not how real life works.

Life in the 1800s was brutal and not for the faint of heart. Very few “good guys” existed. Everyone did terrible things to each other, whether it was the US government, settlers, Texas Rangers, or the different tribes of Native Americans.

I’ve only watched a couple of episodes of American Primeval, but I’m already hooked, and I’ll probably watch the final four episodes this weekend.

But I do need to warn you that it’s a little bloody in some parts if that sort of thing bothers you. (that might be an understatement) Seeing someone getting scalped or taking an arrow to the forehead isn’t the most pleasant of experiences.

However, the different storylines are really interesting, and there is never a dull moment. Many movies often bore me, and it’s nice to actually watch a show where the hour goes by so quickly because it’s so much better than most things on TV.

So, if you are looking for a gritty western that doesn’t follow all of the boring tropes, I would highly recommend you to check it out!
