Today marks the 250th anniversary of the Army’s birthday, and it’s a day we celebrate. I spent 20 years in the Army.
The Army wasn’t my first job after finishing college. I spent the summer working at McDonald’s until I left for basic training in the fall.
To get to work, I walked about a mile and a half or roller-bladed to work to open the store. My mom picked me up when my shift ended.
Those who knew me saw that I was very frugal. I didn’t like having debt waiting for me to pay off the credit card. Rarely did I buy the latest fad or trend of the day.
Don’t get me wrong, I did buy some things when I was stationed in Korea for my first assignment.
But I avoided accumulating too much junk.
Instead, I maxed out my IRA or retirement account every month.
After reading dozens of financial magazines, I saw the best way was to save for my retirement. I didn’t have anything else to spend my money on, which I’ll mention later.
