What I Learned About Writing Talking to Artists
Three Takeaways That Will Improve Your Writing
My writing teacher, Jack Grapes, who created and teaches Method Writing, invited me and my husband, Bill, to an art class one Saturday afternoon. But it wasn’t just any art class; it was more of a gallery tour for art collectors and lovers led by Edward Goldman. And he knows his stuff; he’s been an art critic for thirty years and hosted a radio show, “Art Talk,” a former weekly program that aired prime-time Tuesday evenings during All Things Considered on LA’s largest NPR affiliate, KCRW 89.9 FM.
Through these classes, participants have privileged access to artist studios, private collectors’ homes, art galleries, and museum exhibitions before they are opened to the public, where they engage in informal, spirited conversations about art and culture.
We met at Le Great Outdoor at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, the West Coast's largest art gallery and complex. The restaurant has a great menu (we ate there after visiting the first two galleries).
The tour started with a brief introduction over coffee. There were eleven of us, some writers, photographers, actors and directors, and art lovers. I’m not a collector or an art aficionado; I am a writer, so I consider myself an artist. My medium is language.
