WRITING | TO NICHE OR NOT TO NICHE?

What If Writers Could Climb Into the Minds of Their Readers?

Should we be mindful of writing stories not on brand point in the reader’s mind?

Brilliant comedians read the room, have impeccable timing and rhythmic delivery. Otherwise, the crowd sits idle, starts talking to one another, and orders another drink, hoping the alcohol will help tickle their funny bone. I’ve been there.

We’re drawn to a certain type of humor the same way we’re drawn to whatever makes a writer interesting or noteworthy; niche, voice, tone, engagement. These elements, considered a writer’s brand, are their bread and butter.

I’ve never considered building a brand image for myself — I’m not a niche writer. Based on experience, I write from a personal perspective to share my life lessons. Readers deserve to read quality writing no matter the subject, entitled to read what speaks to them.

It gives me overwhelming pleasure when my writing resonates with readers. If my heart were visible, it would mirror a cartoon character’s beating outside of my chest every time someone compliments my work or has an AHA moment because of something I’ve written.
