Now, more than ever, it is important that we as Americans — that we as human beings — recognize and embrace the diversity that is all around us, the diversity that is real-real life.

Failure to understand the nuances of what it means to be an American have plagued our country so thoroughly that a man who sows division by trade is now our president. Women’s rights are under attack, our Muslim compatriots are being outcast, and many other minority groups — to include those in the LGBTQ, Black, Latinx, East/Southeast/Western Asian, and Native American communities — are being rejected from the “picturesque American portrait.”

So what does it mean to be an American? John Cena, speaking for the “Love Has No Labels” campaign, reminds us that our picturesque America is only beautiful when our entire family is included in the portrait.

“…It’s stitched into the stars and stripes of this country, from the Constitution to Gettysburg, to our motto, ‘E Plurbus Unum…’ from many: one. It’s even in our country’s name: The UNITED States.”
