According to numerous reports and an Executive press conference, President Donald J. Trump has retaliated tonight against the Assad regime in Syria for its chemical attacks against civilians on Tuesday.

“Tonight I ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched,” the President stated to members of the press corps from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Stating that the chemical attack caused the “slow and brutal death of many,” he declared that this strike was in the “vital security interest of the United States.”

Attacks specifically targeted Shayrat Airfield in Syria — striking planes, hangars, and fuel tanks.

Experts courted by various news and media networks have stated that they believe these attacks are a part of and start to a greater military campaign in Syria.

The implications of this attack, and future ones, potentially spell out a world war, given that Assad is backed by Russia and Iran in its operations. There are not guarantees on these developments turning into major, hegemonic warfare — especially if they are one-off strikes — but a legitimate “red line” has been crossed in the war that different world powers and the previous US administration were careful to avoid.

Taking to legitimate and direct action against Basha al Assad is a new and great development in the Syrian Civil War, of which Russia and Iran are on one end, and the United States and a few of its NATO and Arab state allies are on the other.

If Syria, and potentially Russia or Iran, decide to escalate engagement even further, we may find ourselves in a difficult global position.

This story will be updated as new developments occur.

Time: 10:10 PM EST.

UPDATE (1) 10:43 PM EST: It has been reported that there were Russians on the airfield at the time, despite their being warned about the airstrike beforehand.
