Submission Guidelines

New Ideas in American History is accepting pitches for short essays about exceptional new books in the field of American history.

While we welcome light critiques, these 1–2K word “dispatches” should focus on the ways the books change our understanding of the past, and especially on what they have to offer readers outside of the academy, such as K-12 teachers and other informal educators.

The books under consideration should be no more than one year old. We are especially interested in dispatches about books that have not received much attention in other venues.

Pitches should be sent by email to newideas@newamericanhistory.org. They should concisely convey what you believe to be the book’s most exciting contributions to the greater public. We welcome any links to other published material that demonstrate your ability to write clearly and compellingly for a non-specialist audience.

Contributors to New Ideas in American History will be compensated for their work.

New Ideas in American History is a project of New American History.
