Courtney and Gordon are in Baja California all week sharing what we are working on and learning from others. Big thank you to Beta Diversidad and The Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project (PBOL) for inviting us to be a part of this incredible event.

We’ve been greatly inspired by people like Mario Gomez, Executive Director of Beta Diversidad as well as by headlines like this recent one in the Financial Times: Biodiversity quickly rises up the ESG investing agenda. Investors are continuing to understand how critical biodiversity is to our planet which will help provide the necessary funding to projects around the world.

Our Oceans team is processing our first batch of metagenomes from the Tara Ocean open repository and preparing to run our pilot metagenome data analysis within our decentralized cloud-based lab. This is the first step towards establishing a quantitative framework in biodiversity assessment.

Positive news from around the globe

The Oceana Annual Report highlights page after page of progress. One example of the work they’ve championed: The National Marine Fisheries Service in the United States has enacted a new rule in the New England fishery that will prevent excessive bycatch and overfishing. This will ensure that science-based catch limits can be properly set and enforced. You can read more here.

Community Spotlight

Jeff Romero— an incredibly talented graphic artist — dove into the New Atlantis community head first. Barely a day begins without a GM from Jeff and he’s doing an amazing job helping us visually tell the NA story. His generosity not only of his time and skills but also of spirit is infectious. You can read more about Jeff here.

What we’re reading, what we are listening to, who we are following.
