DeSci for the win!

Gordon presenting at IPFS Camp in Portugal

Gordon and Jay are back home from IPFS Camp in Portugal where Gordon presented on NewAtlantis. From Gordon and Jay: “There is a lot of momentum building around DeSci. The vibe at the conference was amazingly positive. Everyone is excited to build this brand new world and there was great interest around the unique value proposition of NewAtlantis.” Feedback from the audience made it’s way back to the rest of us through Discord as well and the comment we loved best was “Gordon is the most charismatic badass out there.” (Sorry to embarrass you, Gordon 🙂)

If you are interested, you can see the opening keynote from IPFS here.

Meantime, we had a fascinating talk this week in the Ocean Talk Community Chat with a group of scientists who expressed the challenges they face with moving their work forward in the context of current economic models that incentivize labs to keep their data private. These chats continue to inform our thinking around how to design models that allow for both open data sharing and rewarding scientists for their work.

Our Community Chats happen every week on Ocean Talk on Discord. Check the events channel for dates and times and join us!

Positive news from around the globe

From Bloomberg News: “A new $100 million venture fund is teaming up with one of the world’s leading marine research institutes to invest exclusively in ocean technologies that can help solve the climate crisis.” Big congratulations from the whole team over here to NA advisor Julie Pullen and our friend Brian Halligan for launching Propeller. We know great things are going to come from combining their experience (and now funds) with great ideas and entrepreneurs.

Community Spotlight:

The word that comes to mind when we read Carolina Menchaca’s posts on Discord is “sunny.” She has this incredibly kind and happy way of speaking that — combined with her passion for her work (and the work of NA!) and her deep knowledge in her field — makes her a really wonderful contributor to our community. Read more about Carolina here.

What we’re reading, what we are listening to, who we are following.

101:

The Guardian compiled this amazing collection of the year’s best mangrove photographs.

A five minute animated video voiced by Sir David Attenborough explaining the importance of biodiversity.

201:

This paper discussing how marine biodiversity is a solution for climate change and the factors that control marine biodiversity.

The reading list which came out of ConGen 2022 — focused on Conservation Genetics, Population Genomics and Molecular Ecology.

What we need:

We just kicked off a really fun project on Discord! Each week, we’ll put out a fact about the ocean and we’re looking to our community to create a graphic illustration to go with it using Midjourney (a program that uses AI to create illustrations from text). Head on over to our Midjourney channel in Discord to see what you can come up with (you’ll see what other people have already created as well.)

This week’s prompt: Oceans feed nearly 3 billion people.

As always, thanks for reading! Whether you’re a scientist, a developer, a web3 native, a marketer, a surfer, a beach lover…we need you! If you’ve not joined our discord yet, please do and jump into the conversation.
