My doorbell rang the other day. I looked at the video from my Ring doorbell on my Alexa. It was the daughter of our neighbors down the street. She must be visiting from Mississippi.
My husband and I have lived in our Florida home for twenty-three years — since it was two years old — so we are one of the longest-lasting families in the neighborhood. When we moved in, a couple three houses down from us downsized into that four-bedroom, three-bath house. Since they were much older than we were, we started to keep an eye on them.
We would bring them food when I made a big pot of anything and check with them when we had not seen them on their patio. Every now and again, we might drop them off for some small task or pick something up for them from the store. They were typical older, rich white people.
Remember, they downsized into a house similar to one that we brought as our full-sized home. Okay, two people buying a four-bedroom house for themselves is a “first-world” problem. Hey, we are living the Florida lifestyle.
When I opened the door, the daughter told me her parents had informed her we were no longer coming by, which was true. She wanted to know why our kindness had stopped. I asked her why she thought…
