“Just as fuel feeds the fire double,
Like wildfire, gossip feeds trouble.”

In today’s information-driven world, our words hold immense power. Proverbs 26:20 says, Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. In simpler terms, gossip fuels conflict just as wood fuels fire. In this day and hour, the news travels at the speed of light, and our choice of conversation topics becomes crucial. It emphasizes the importance of guarding our words and focusing on speaking about God rather than others.

This Proverb emphasizes the dangers of gossip and slander, which can cause discord, damage reputations, and strain relationships. The verse urges us to avoid idle words and instead focus on edifying and God-honoring conversations, recognizing their destructive potential in the modern world.

Words can uplift or downlift, and believers are called to use speech to build grace and encourage others through God-centered discussions, sown in their lives. Ephesians 4:29 says,Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Jesus emphasizes the importance of words, stating that idle gossip and negative talk have eternal implications. Focusing on God’s goodness aligns with His purpose in our speech. In Matthew 12:36–37 He said: “…every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

The wisdom of being slow to anger and quick to listen — a testament to self-control in communication. James 1:19 says,Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:Any religious person who cannot control the manner of his communication, his religion is worthless, pointless, and meaningless. James 1:26 directly tells us,If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

To promote harmony and peace in our lives, avoid gossip and malicious talk. Instead, focus on spreading rumors and avoiding unnecessary conflicts. Proverbs 16:28 condemns divisive nature, and James 3:6 warns against destructive tongues. Engage in discussions about God’s character, love, and plans, providing answers that resonate with divine truth.

In a world where gossip is tempting, remember Jesus Christ as the standard for speech. Focusing on Him and engaging in conversations that reflect His nature ensures our words bring life and healing. Seek inspiration from Jesus, the Word made flesh, as guardians of gracious words. John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Brethren, guard your word; we are representatives of Jesus Christ to share His word and not our word. May our words bring encouragement, kindness, and grace to those who hear us, reflecting the character of our Lord Jesus Christ in our daily lives.

Always Begin With God
