I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.” Ezekiel 34:16 NIV

Ezekiel 34 uses the metaphor of shepherds tending their flocks to demonstrate the condition of Israel. Israel’s leaders had failed to shepherd their flock with justice and mercy, and now the nation was being spiritually and physically overtaken.

Like the Israelites during Ezekiel’s time, we can find ourselves feeling overcome by apathy, the world’s distractions, and sin. Thankfully, we have a Good Shepherd who will not abandon His flock. Just as He promised through Ezekiel, God Himself will bind up our wounds, heal our broken hearts, and strengthen our resolve. We do not need to trust our own power, but the power of the Holy Spirit in us.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

— Matthew 5:3 NIV
