Do YOU Have CONFIDENCE When You WRITE?

It takes tremendous confidence and ‘guts’ to write.

Out of our inner being, we draw up, as from a well, our thoughts.

We attempt to pull together all of the pieces we’ve assembled — our inner thoughts, snatches of research, remembered experiences, our beliefs and placing them into a piece that is meaningful and well written.

Do we, as writers, sometimes find ourselves LOSING confidence in ourselves as we begin a new piece?

Are we:

All tangled up within a piece?

Searching for the correct word which we just can’t find?

Trying to phrase the sentence so that it makes sense?

Downplaying the most important information?

Getting caught in the weeds of too many and too much?

Formatting so that it is a jumbled mess?

Choosing an illustration or photograph which doesn’t fit?

All of those issues can cause us to lose CONFIDENCE in our abilities. We may have a great idea that we want to share. We’ve written well in the past, yet doubts flood in. Will this particular piece only be just that — full of pieces that just don’t resonate with anyone?

Confidence, is a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.

When we lose confidence or self assurance, it is VERY difficult to write.

Maybe that is exactly where it is BEST to be!

If we are unsure of ourselves, turning to God for His help is exactly what He wants!

Scripture tells us: “ I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in me and I in him shall produce a large crop of fruit. For apart from me you can’t do a thing.” Jesus said in John 15:5

Do we believe it?

Are we relying on our own human wisdom and abilities or on His?

Are we ready to turn to Him for His help?

AFTER going to God FIRST, here are some more suggestions about how to build self-confidence:

  • Make lists of your achievements and things in your life for which you are proud.
  • Acknowledge your personal strengths and talents, reminding yourself of them often.
  • Set realistic goals for yourself.
  • Practice positive self-talk.

NOW we can jump right in, create that title, assemble the words and end with a dash of excitement in what you have created!
