Getting Rid of Idols in Your Heart.

Unconsciously we (Christians) harbor idols in our hearts — hidden icons — that control our attitudes and actions. It is easy to put up an outward show of piety, by engaging in religious rituals and reveling in human praise. So we are really not free. We are slaves to the controlling idols in our hearts. We allow humans and things to take the place of God in our lives.

We may not admit it to ourselves, but they get more attention than God, informing our deeds and actions. They seem to offer us more meaning and happiness. Some things are more obvious: success, work, image, material possession, and even our smartphones.

But idols in our hearts go even deeper. They are bound up with the deepest emotions and instincts of our hearts and that is what keeps them hidden.

God’s command to His chosen people of Israel is this:

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt and out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20: 2–3).

Are you one of the chosen of the LORD? Are you out of “Egypt and the land of slavery”?

If you are serious about putting God first in your life and want to be free of the hangovers of “Egypt” we invite you to join us in the series: “Deepening Your Walk with God.”

Jesus says, “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
