When I turned 30, I started waking up

The brief story of how I started the awakening process, part one

My late twenties in Southern California were desperate times. I was a lost soul on a path to self-destruction.

Success in sales afforded me the first period of my adult life with my own apartment and some luxuries without incurring debt. But my workplace became a haven for broken professionals. Souls destroyed by addiction putting their lives back together, as well as users and abusers. We shared a sense of community. A community that did not support the highest possibilities for my life.

Several wealthy clients befriended me and tried to lift me up. I availed myself of their generosity of spirit and time. But their attempts failed. I sabotaged or walked away from the relationships.

An unexpected opportunity to break the cycle came in the early 1990s. I discovered a game created by José Argüelles called Dreamspell. Based in the Mayan calendar and a cycle of time based in 13:20, with a 13 moon and 28 day calendar instead of the Gregorian 12:60 time base, Dreamspell promised to reverse the spell of mechanized time and “get the human race back on course.” I played the game for hours and hours. Something changed inside of me. I felt lighter. I started moving away from the self-destructive influences in my life.

That summer I found an ad about the Dreamspell and the Harmonic Convergence. I had joined a retreat a few years before, spending a mountain weekend with my girlfriend. She broke up with me afterwards, and I never looked back. Until the Dreamspell called me to experience the convergence again. The advertisers offered a camp-out in the mountains.

On a Friday night after work, I loaded the car and headed into the mountains. I couldn’t find the dirt road to the camp-out, so I pulled into a sketchy campground to spend the night, thinking I’d try to find the dirt road in the morning. Setting up the tent with no light was quite the adventure. I ate and settled into the sleeping bag. Evil lived in this place. I felt immersed in a pit of snakes. I don’t think I slept at all. At the first sign of light, I headed out to find my destination.

Back on the highway by dawn, I found the dirt road right away and proceeded into the high desert for at least a half hour, wondering the whole time what I was getting myself into. Finally, I found the camp-out. Everyone was awake, drinking coffee or tea, and watching the sunrise. They welcomed me. We spent the morning hanging out, eating breakfast, and talking about the Dreamspell and the Harmonic Convergence. I don’t remember the details of what we talked about, but I remember how connected I felt with them, and with a gal my age in particular. As the sun grew uncomfortably warm, they invited me back to their home to watch a video.

We settled into the living room of my new friends’ home. It was a warm, comfortable place decorated in earth tones and aging furniture. It all seemed like nothing out of the ordinary. Until our host inserted the VHS tape and pressed play.

Two heavy set individuals, a man and a woman, appeared on screen. They introduced themselves as the Extraterrestrial Earth Mission, ET Earth Mission for short. John Hale Davis and his partner introduced themselves as ZaviRah and Ziva’rah, extraterrestrials who were “here to wake up those that are here to wake up those that are here to wake up those…” into a new spiritual consciousness and a new civilization. I remember little of what they said, but I remember when they sang. I’d heard nothing like it. The song infused the cells of my body with light and changed me from the inside out. The light cracked me open. My being merged with the gal I met that morning. We made love without touching. For the first time, I was aware of myself as more than a human.

When I returned to my apartment that afternoon, basking in the afterglow of extraordinary experiences, I did not know that my life had just been turned upside down.
