a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.

Reiki has been around for almost 3000 years. Reiki is not the only form of energy healing out there but it is the most common and the name itself is the most recognizable to the general public.

It was developed in the way we know it today by Dr. Mikaeo Usui in Japan in the late 1800’s early 1900’s and then standardized by one of his students Chujiro Hayashi.

From there, Hayashi taught a woman named Hawayo Takata, who had come to him for a healing session for several ailments. She marveled at the fact that he healed all her ailments and decided that she must learn this as well. Takata was of Hawaiian/Japanese descent, and it is said that she is the one who brought Reiki over to the West and began teaching on this side of the world as well in about 1930.

People have argued for decades over the legitimacy of reiki and whether or not it actually works.
