Spiritual awakening refers to the process of growing and expanding one’s consciousness beyond the physical body and material world. It involves shifts in one’s worldview and way of seeing reality at a deeper level. When one is spiritually awakened, one starts to see the interconnected nature of all things and realizes we are not separate, individual beings, but rather interdependent parts of a greater whole. Spiritual awakening is a journey, not a destination, and there are various signs and stages along the way.

What does it mean to be spiritually awakened?

Awakening spiritually is realizing that you are a part of something greater in size than yourself. An awakened person starts to see through illusion and develop a sense of oneness with all of creation.

“What you seek is seeking you.” — Rumi

Specific traits of a spiritually awakened individual include:

  • Seeing others as extensions of yourself rather than as separate entities. You understand that we are all united in spirit.
  • Having experiences that transcend logic and rationale, such as deep insights, mystical events, or feelings of limitless love and peace.
  • Questioning societal and cultural conditioning, and developing your sense of truth and values.
  • Developing compassion and empathy for all people regardless of differences. The suffering of others is perceived as one’s suffering.
  • Gaining awareness of higher or nonphysical planes of existence and your soul’s purpose for incarnating.
  • Experiencing life as a flow rather than a series of discrete events. Causality and time are perceived differently.
  • Having enhanced intuition, psychic abilities, increased creativity, and expanded states of consciousness.
  • Striving for continued personal growth through meaningful experiences rather than material acquisition or ego fulfillment.
