“Spirituality means you are unwilling to settle for a piece of creation. Seeking the infinite is spirituality.” Sadhguru

We’ve all heard that Desire is the root of all evil on a spiritual path, leading to suffering and selfishness. But what if we’ve been looking at it all wrong? What if Desire, when channeled properly, can be a powerful force for personal growth and spiritual expansion? What if Desire is the fundamental force that propels us to grow and evolve? What if Desire is the Divine medium our I AM, or Higher Self, uses to communicate with us? This perspective opens up a world of possibilities, empowering us to embrace our desires and use them as stepping stones toward spiritual growth and fulfillment.

“Your heart’s desires are a roadmap to your true purpose.” — Kasie West, Listen to Your Heart

There’s a secret language that I AM, sometimes called your Higher Self or Soul Self, uses to communicate with you. It’s the language of Desire — those deep, unshakable yearnings that pull you towards something more significant — something that feels like your true purpose. These desires are not whims or fleeting thoughts but authentic, genuine expressions of your innermost Self. Recognizing and honoring these desires is crucial to your spiritual growth and fulfillment.

The Desire To Grow and Expand is Divine

Humans’ very nature is to constantly desire to be something more than what they are right now — the Desire to grow, evolve, and expand echos the purpose of creation.

In order to know ItSelf, ‘All That Is’ extended ItSelf into ItSelf, and all of creation came to be.

Creating new worlds is how the Creator knows ItSelf. The same underlying desire to create is an innate aspect of human beings. We grow and evolve when we create a new relationship, business, or hobby. We come to know more of who we are. Authentic desires propel us to become more of who we are in our full Divine potential.

Desires inspire and motivate us to become more of who and what we are. They point us to our purpose, our life mission. All great men and women who have benefitted humanity in some way have been propelled forward by a burning desire they can’t ignore. The ultimate Desire for liberation puts people on a spiritual path. Without a strong desire to expand, grow, and evolve, there would be no motivation to change oneself.

But here’s the thing: not all desires are created equal. Some desires come from a place of authenticity, the true Self or I AM, while others are just the ego’s attempt to mimic the real thing. For instance, a desire to help others selflessly, a desire to learn and grow spiritually, or a desire to create something meaningful are all examples of authentic desires. So, how do you tell the difference between an ego desire and an authentic desire? Keep reading to find out.

What Is An Authentic Desire

When we talk about desires from the I AM, or Higher Self, we are talking about deep urgings. Authentic desires are usually long-term. They may come on strong at certain times in our lives. At other times, they may be less strong, only to come back again, letting themselves be known.

These are different from temporary, short-term desires such as the desire to eat, sleep, or even see a movie. The desire to eat is more of a need of the physical body. The desire to see a movie or go out and have fun is often a need of the personality self. These genuine desires come from the personality self (the mental, emotional, and physical bodies), not from the higher aspects of Self.

They are also not usually false ego desires. What are ego desires?

The Ego’s False Desires

The ego tricks us into feeling separate and alone from creation. It’s a part of our mind driven by self-interest and self-preservation. But it’s just a body of pretension. It pretends to be who we truly are. It tries to mimic the authentic ‘I AM’ within you. But it doesn’t have the capability to be the real thing. It’s the ego that creates false desires, desires that are driven by fear, insecurity, and the need for validation. With a lot of blood, sweat, and tears trying to make them happen, ego desires can sometimes manifest in our lives. But when and if they manifest, they rarely bring fulfillment.

Because the ego can only pretend to be authentic, it makes false desires. Ego desires are not real. They may feel real, but they can leave us feeling frustrated and hollow inside when we pursue them. For instance, the desire for social status, constant validation, or power and control are all examples of the ego’s false desires. These desires can lead to a feeling of emptiness and dissatisfaction.

Ego desire inevitably creates more separation in the world. Power and control are the ego’s goals. As the ego is incapable of perceiving inclusivity and how we are all connected, its world is one of scarcity and lack. It sees only through the eyes of limitation.

Take the Desire for more money and wealth, for example. Sure, financial stability is important. And desiring to be abundance can be authentic. But when the desire for more becomes an end in and of itself, it’s just the ego talking. Chasing after that kind of Desire is a surefire way to end up dissatisfied. It can trigger a cycle of self-destructive behavior, leading to negative consequences that affect both the individual and society. For instance, it can lead to greed, exploitation, and a disregard for the well-being of others.

The Futility of Accumulating Things Just for the Sake of Accumulation

We’ve all been there. We think we’ll finally be happy if we acquire more stuff. But it’s a never-ending cycle. The pursuit of temporary fulfillment through accumulation is a hallmark of the ego.

You get a brief hit of satisfaction when you buy that new car or get that promotion, but it doesn’t last. Before you know it, you’re back to feeling empty and searching for the next thing to fill the void.

But what if there was another way? What if true fulfillment came from somewhere else entirely?

Embracing Your Authentic Longing

“Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.” — Napoleon Hill

The Desire for expansion is a fundamental human trait. But it’s not just any desire — it’s an authentic desire that comes from the I AM within you.

This Desire for growth can manifest in many ways, such as seeking knowledge, authentic empowerment, or spiritual understanding. At its core, it’s the ultimate yearning to transcend one’s current limitations and realize one’s limitless potential.

And here’s the key: true fulfillment comes from realizing your potential as the unlimited divine Self that you are, not from accumulating more stuff. It’s about tapping into something much more profound.

“Desire is the very essence of your life. It is an unending thing. If you fulfill one, the next one will be ready.” Sadhguru

Desire as a Spiritual Fuel

So, how do you harness the power of Desire for spiritual growth? It starts with redefining Desire itself. Instead of seeing it as a negative force, consider it an unbounded energy for positive change.

When you remove the stigma associated with Desire and channel that energy towards spiritual pursuits, amazing things can happen. For instance, meditation and devotion can become vehicles for transformative growth, allowing you to tap into a full-force flow of boundless Desire. Other examples of spiritual pursuits that can be fueled by desire include selfless service, seeking spiritual knowledge, and practicing mindfulness.

True Desires Are Not Bound to One Thing

Your I AM is unlimited in its power to create. It communicates to you, the personality self, through inner urgings and desires. However, on the level of your I AM, these desires are not limited to a specific form. For example, it can take many forms if you have an urge to express your creativity. Perhaps you wish to express music. Or you can express yourself through writing. Or your creative expression is forming a business. These are all ways to channel the I AM’s desire to express your creativity.

A Fluid Direction

When you feel a desire from deep within, don’t be in a hurry to tell yourself it has to look a certain way when manifested in your life. Setting goals around your desires is good, but these goals should give you a fluid direction. Let the desire unfold and blossom at each step of the way. When you do so, the power of your I AM can line up probabilities for you to manifest the desire. Often, these probabilities will lead to opportunities greater than you imagined when trying to force the urge to look a specific way.

This is the power of Desire without a goal that is too narrow, a goal that gives you a fluid direction. It’s about allowing that energy to move through you freely, without the constraints of the ego’s limited perspective.

Cultivating Inclusiveness

Something incredible happens as you expand your desires beyond the self-centered realm of the ego. You begin to experience a natural progression towards inclusiveness and connectedness.

No longer are your aspirations limited to your own personal gain. Instead, you start to desire the well-being and growth of others and, eventually, of all beings. You begin to align with the fundamental interconnectedness of existence itself.

This shift requires dissolving the psychological boundaries and limited identities that keep us separate. When you embrace existence’s inherent inclusiveness, your desires naturally become more expansive and universal.

Living with Courage and Intensity

But let’s be honest: this kind of unbounded Desire takes courage. It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking security through accumulation, hiding behind possessions and achievements instead of fully embracing life.

On the other hand, Genuine Desire is about having the courage to seek the infinite. It’s about daring to explore all dimensions of life without reservation, striving to realize your ultimate potential as a creator, not just a creation.

This kind of intensity requires letting go of the need for constant accumulation. It’s about embracing life fully, with all its uncertainties and challenges, knowing that true fulfillment comes from within. It takes courage to step away from the comfort of accumulation and face life’s uncertainties head-on. But this courage fuels our spiritual growth and leads us to a more fulfilling life.

Actionable Steps

So, how can you start harnessing the power of Authentic Desire in your life? Here are a few actionable steps to get you started:

1. Cultivate Authentic Desires — Cultivate the desires for personal growth and spiritual evolution that go beyond material gain.

2. Fluid Direction — Practice the art of creating a fluid direction when creating your goals.

3. Boundless Meditation — When meditating, bring in unbounded desires. Unbounded desires are essences and are not bound to a specific goal or outcome.

4. Embrace Life — Embrace life with courage and intensity, letting go of the need for constant accumulation and security.

5. Awareness — Be aware of your desires. Use discernment when following them. If they are authentic, they can lead to fulfillment. If they are of the ego, they can lead to suffering.

6. Attachment and Detachment — Practice detachment, not by renouncing desires but by engaging with them without becoming attached. This means enjoying life’s pleasures without becoming dependent on them for happiness.

7. Alignment — Consistently choose to align with your authentic desires. Allow them to guide you toward your highest potential.

When channeled towards boundless spiritual growth, Desire is a powerful ally on the path to self-realization and fulfillment. By reframing your perception of Desire and contentment, you open yourself up to a new world of possibilities.

But it’s not about chasing superficial desires or accumulating more stuff. It’s about tapping into the deep, authentic yearnings that come from your Higher Self — the “I AM” within you.

When you allow those authentic desires to guide you, you’ll find yourself on a journey of incredible growth and transformation. You’ll start to experience the interconnectedness of all things and the true expansive nature of your being.

So don’t be afraid to want more. Just make sure you’re desiring the right things. Listen to the language of your Higher Self, and let your authentic desires be your guide.

When you do, you’ll discover a path to spiritual growth and fulfillment you never knew was possible. And that, my friend, is the power of boundless Desire.
