We all want the formula for how to make it work. An equation, a step-by-step process that is rote and programmable that can be replicated again and again.
This gives us some sense that we could have repeatable results.
“If I do what the plan says, everything will work out right,” we tell ourselves.
That summarizes the success of 95% of self-help, personal development, and essentially the entire non-fiction book market.
And I get it.
I wanted to have fresh produce and be a gardener so I decided to give it a try. I took eight medium-sized plastic pots and filled them halfway up with potting soil. I planted cherry tomatoes and okra in them.
The seen packs said when to plant them and to water them twice a day. And they said that in 4–6 weeks I’d see sprouts on the surface of the soil.
I did everything as instructed on the seed packets, as well as followed the guidance of three master gardener friends. AND…I added one extra thing to the process: I talked to the soil and the seeds twice a day (dawn and sunset) when I watered.
