What is New East? Is it worth following it?

New East is a new publication dedicated to Asian art and culture. When you hear the word ‘East’ or ‘Asia’, you may think of different areas, but we have adopted a broad definition of Asia, which refers to a vast region that covers about 80% of Eurasia, including a large part of Russia and Turkey.

By ‘art and culture’, we mean artworks, crafts, performing arts, music, literature, films, architecture, fashion, design, lifestyle, philosophy, cooking, sports, religions or other cultures.

We have added the adjective ‘New’ to the word ‘East’ because of the contemporary nature of this publication. We may take you to ancient ruins in Indonesia or show poetry from the Heian period in Japan, but we will also explore the connections between them and us today, and the inspiration we can draw from them. The articles will include each writer’s personal stories and opinions, too. In other words, we present them to you as ‘living culture’, even if they were created thousands of years ago.
